Understanding What a Missed Period Might Mean

The first step after missing your period is usually taking a pregnancy test. While a late period is often one of the earliest signs of pregnancy, it doesn’t provide a clear answer. Hormonal fluctuations, health conditions, significant weight changes, or stress can all disrupt your normal cycle. That’s why it’s important to avoid assuming anything too quickly.

Other symptoms, like nausea, cramping, and fatigue, can be common in early pregnancy, but they can also point to other conditions. The only way to get clarity is to take a test.

When and How to Test

If you’ve missed your period or had unprotected sex a few weeks ago, it’s time to take a test. Taking a pregnancy test several days after your missed period or about two to three weeks after sexual activity can provide more reliable results.

Pregnancy Choices offers lab-grade urine pregnancy testing to help you find answers. If your test is positive, we may also provide an ultrasound to verify pregnancy details like how far along you are and whether the pregnancy is developing.

Why an Ultrasound Matters

An ultrasound can help identify essential details early in pregnancy. Without this scan, you won’t know whether your pregnancy is progressing or if you’re experiencing certain conditions like miscarriage that could require medical monitoring or treatment.

This information is critical before exploring your options. For example, medical abortion is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks gestation, and an ultrasound will provide this detail so you can make a decision that safeguards your health.  Whether you’re considering abortion, adoption, or parenting, we’re here to make sure you’re equipped with facts in a respectful and confidential setting.
