An ultrasound is an essential tool that helps you understand the critical details of your pregnancy, ensuring your health and safety. Without it, it’s impossible to fully confirm your pregnancy or gather the vital information that helps you make informed decisions about your next steps. If you’ve never had one, you may not know all the information an ultrasound can provide.

At Pregnancy Choices, we want to empower you with the necessary resources to stay safe. Our team offers no-cost ultrasounds to help you understand your pregnancy better, giving you peace of mind as you navigate your options.

Understanding the Ultrasound Process

Before diving into the details, it’s helpful to know how an ultrasound works. During an ultrasound, sound waves are emitted from a small device called a transducer. These waves bounce off different structures in your body, including the pregnancy, creating images on a screen.

These images assess the developing pregnancy and your reproductive health, offering the details you need to plan what’s next. The first ultrasound is crucial for confirming the pregnancy and understanding its progression.

Most women typically have one or two ultrasounds during pregnancy unless additional care is recommended for specific health situations.

What You’ll Learn from an Ultrasound

An ultrasound provides essential information that can help protect your health and impact your decisions. Here’s what you’ll learn during the first scan:

Pregnancy Viability

An ultrasound is the only way to confirm the pregnancy’s viability, ensuring it’s progressing properly and that a heartbeat is detected. Miscarriage occurs in up to 26% of pregnancies, so if you’ve experienced a previous loss, monitoring the current pregnancy is vital to avoid further complications.

Edad gestacional

Knowing how far along you are (gestational age) is critical for understanding your options. For example, medical abortion is approved only through 10 weeks of gestation. Taking these drugs beyond this point is not recommended.

Pregnancy Location

An ultrasound also determines whether your pregnancy is located in the uterus. If the pregnancy occurs outside the uterus, such as in the fallopian tube (ectopic pregnancy), immediate medical treatment is required to protect your health.

Ectopic pregnancies are serious and can be life-threatening, which is a good reason not to delay getting an ultrasound.
