If you’re considering abortion, it’s important to pause and make sure you voice the questions you have. Understanding Abortion Types

There are two main types of abortion: medical abortion (often referred to as the abortion pill) and surgical abortion. Each comes with risks and considerations, and understanding how they work is essential before deciding.

Medical abortion involves two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol. The first blocks the hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy, and the second causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. This method is typically used up to 10 weeks into pregnancy. Risks may include fever, heavy bleeding, nausea, and an incomplete abortion, which could require a follow-up surgical procedure to prevent infection.

Surgical abortion is a physical procedure in which the pregnancy is removed through suction or surgical tools for pregnancies dated up to 24 weeks gestation. Risks may include heavy bleeding, infection, damage to the uterus or cervix, and in rare cases, long-term fertility issues or chronic pelvic pain.

Taking Your Time to Decide

It’s completely natural to feel pressure or confusion in the middle of an unexpected pregnancy. But this is your decision, and it’s okay to slow down and gather the information you need before moving forward. Abortion is a permanent choice, and you deserve to explore all your options in a supportive space.

Emotions after abortion may range from positive to negative, and can be a confusing mix of both. Some women report emotional or mental health impacts after abortion. These feelings can emerge shortly after an abortion or even years later, and the risk can be increased for women who originally feel unsure or conflicted before their abortion decision.
